About Us

Dr. Cheru Atraga, clinical associate professor of nursing at Georgia State University and his wife Rachel, have made it their life's work to help the children of Gubre, Ethiopia. Their dream is to build a library where the children can have a safe place to study and access educational materials.
Their dedication to this project is so genuine that it has attracted supporters from all over the U.S. and
Ethiopia. What began as a family charity project, collecting funds outside of supermarkets, has now blossomed into a full fledged 501c(3) non-profit.
Save the Generation is served by a board of caring individuals who assist Dr. Atraga in logistics, fundraising, managing, and raising awareness of the needs of the Gubre community. Their service is rooted in a love of Christ and for the poor.
Please join us in saving the next generation of Ethiopian children in Gubre.
Why Access and Quality of Education Matters
The children of Ethiopia face many difficulties to attend school and get the education they so desperately need to have a better life. They are expected to help the family finically and also with domestic labor especially young girls which can take precious time away from school (UNICEF, Ethiopia).
Unfortunately, 2.6 million primary aged children are not attending school. 57% are females and 43 percent are males. Although children are of enrolled in school, most students do not complete their education. “85 per cent make it past Grade 5 and 54 per cent past Grade 8. Sixty-three per cent of students in lower primary school are not achieving the basic learning outcomes needed to succeed higher up the education ladder (50 per cent and above).” Only 25% of student enroll in high school. This is very concerning for the country. The higher education one has the greater chance they will succeed and break the cycle of poverty (UNICEF, Ethiopia).
Access to libraries is instrumental to meet the needs of children and adolescents. Being inspired at an early age by the excitement of finding knowledge and by works of the imagination, they are likely to benefit from these vital elements of personal development throughout their lives, both enriching themselves and enhancing their contribution to society (IFLA, 20023)
The Save The Generation is planning to work in partnership with the Ministry Of Education and the local community to improve an access and quality of education.
